Diners have been a part of our family for a very long time. As student with very little money, Jack’s Great-Grandfather Norman ate two meals a day at a diner while studying at MIT. For a dime he was able to get a meal, a cup of coffee, and a piece of pie. My family still laughs at my earliest diner moment. At the age of three I was ejected from the Sherwood Diner in CT for getting my fingers stuck in a jukebox. It had to be taken apart by a technician, and I screamed the entire time. As a high school student I fell in love with the classic American Diner after reading Charles Panati’s wonderful account of their history inThe Extraordinary Origins of Everyday Things. I liked their uniquely American history and menu, their differing styles architecture, and their working-class appeal.
While at boarding school I spent much of my free time with my nose in a book while eating toast and drinking bottomless cups of coffee at Wilson's Diner in Waltham and at the much-fabled Tasty in Cambridge. In college, during my frequent trips from Colgate to the other side of NY State I ate at every single diner along Rt. 17 (at that time there were more than a dozen). On my first weekend away with Deena we ate at the Vernon Diner in CT and began our long-standing tradition of making important lists on placemats. Quacks in Madison, NY. The Famous Roscoe. The Agawam.
I love diners. And when Jack was born I decided that I would embark on a mission to take him (and very soon, his baby brother) to every classic American Diner still in existence. Here are our adventures…
